Abs – What are they?

Abs, abdominals, six pack abs are the six abdominal muscles that hold in the stomach and other organs. We've all seen body builders with finely-chiseled abs. Well, how do they do that? Keep reading and I'll explain all about it.

Our abs are muscles and are protein not fat. But unfortunately fat seems to accumulate around and in front of these muscles making them appear flabby. Many adults demonstrate this fat build up by developing a pot belly along with love handles sticking out from their sides.

Flabby abs are not admired in our culture and are a sign of overeating and lack of exercise. In fact the fat that does collect around our waists is not a friendly fat – if there is such a thing – but rather a unhealthy variety of fat called ‘visceral fat’. These globules of fat tend to be much larger than fat globules stored elsewhere on our bodies and are more difficult to breakdown and use.

Fat and Energy Storage

Fat by itself is a good energy-storage mechanism. A gram of fat contains 9 calories as opposed to a gram of protein or carbohydrate which each contain 4 calories. A pound of fat contains about 3,500 calories. You would have to run, swim, or walk a lot of miles just to burn up one pound of body fat.

If we overeat consistently, our liver can convert this excess into fat and store it in our bodies like around our waists. This originally was a good thing. In the distant past when food was scarce the body probably developed this energy-storage mechanism to help humans live through the lean times. So in times of plenty people stuffed themselves and stored fat. When the bad times came they were able to access these stores of energy and life continued.

All Adults Have Abs

We all have abs. It’s a matter of liberating them from the fat that hides them. Doing so is a healthful journey, but it can be a delightful one also. You’ll experience a burst of health, will lose weight, probably develop an immunity to back problems, and be accused of spending countless hours standing in front of a mirror admiring your chiseled body.

This website is devoted to helping you on your way to a stronger and more robust body which will allow you to boldly expose your six-pack abs to the world. Read on...
